ADHD and Attention Issues

What is ADHD?

Having difficulties paying attention or being able to focus can significantly impact the quality of someone's life. Attention, Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is categorised as a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a person's ability to pay attention and focus. ADHD is diagnosed in both children and adults who may have symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity or impulsivity.

ADHD holds a wide range of characteristics. Some characteristics include students not staying focused on one thing for an extended period of time. When they are working on something, reading,  or even listening, they have trouble staying tuned- they get part of it but can then drift off. Their focus can fade in and out; absorbing some of the information, but not others.

Signs of inattention could include:

-Having difficulty focusing

-Making careless mistakes

-Becoming easily distracted

Signs of hyperactivity/ impulsivity could include:

-Trouble sitting still

-Fidgeted or restlessness

-Interrupting others or talking a lot and shouting out answers

Whilst the characteristics of ADHD are problems that everyone faces at least sometimes; not everyone has ADHD. People with ADHD have a significant increase in how much these things trouble their lives.  An ADHD diagnosis is determined when such difficulties are persistent and pervasive and causing a lot of trouble in a person's life. A diagnosis requires at least six symptoms, beyond age-appropriate, that significantly impair multiple aspects of one's life- such as home, school and work. ADHD is not under voluntary control and is not something you can change with willpower. Our one-to-one brain training programme, here at ALP Brain, significantly improves a person's cognitive function and therefore relieves some of the problems students with ADHD may face. Our students with ADHD have reported significant improvements in their overall wellbeing and life.
